If you have dental crowns, bridges, or veneers, you may assume your days of orthodontic treatment are behind you. But what if you’d like to straighten your smile without traditional metal braces? You may be wondering whether Invisalign is still an option.
The good news is that having dental restorations doesn’t automatically disqualify you from clear aligner treatment. However, restorations can affect how your teeth respond to orthodontic movement, so your dentist or orthodontist will need to evaluate your individual smile before recommending Invisalign.
Can I Get Invisalign With Dental Crowns?
Crowns cover the visible portion of a tooth, but the natural tooth root remains underneath. Because Invisalign moves teeth by applying controlled pressure, a crowned tooth may still be capable of moving.
However, the crown itself can affect how an aligner grips the tooth. Your provider may need to consider the crown’s shape, position, and condition when developing your treatment plan. If a crown is old, damaged, or poorly fitting, it may need attention before you begin orthodontic treatment.
It’s also important to let your dental provider know about any crowns you have before getting scanned for aligners.
What If I Have a Dental Bridge?
Bridges require a little more consideration. Unlike a single crown, a traditional dental bridge connects multiple teeth with an artificial tooth between them. Because the teeth supporting the bridge are connected, they can’t necessarily be moved independently in the same way as natural, individual teeth.
That doesn’t automatically rule out Invisalign, but it can make treatment more complicated. Your dentist will need to evaluate the type and location of your bridge and determine whether your desired tooth movements are compatible with your existing restoration.
In some cases, your treatment plan may need to account for the bridge rather than attempting to move the connected teeth.
Can Invisalign Work With Veneers?
Veneers are thin shells bonded to the front of teeth to improve their appearance. Having veneers doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t use Invisalign, but there are some special considerations.
Aligners need to fit securely over the teeth, and the shape and thickness of veneers can influence that fit. Additionally, attachments used during Invisalign treatment are typically bonded to the tooth surface. Your provider will determine whether attachments can be safely and effectively placed on teeth with veneers.
If you have older veneers that are damaged or due for replacement, your dentist may recommend addressing them before or after orthodontic treatment.
Your Treatment Plan Is Unique
The important thing to remember is that there isn’t a universal yes or no when it comes to Invisalign and dental restorations. Your dentist will consider the condition of your teeth and restorations, the movements you need, your bite, and your overall oral health.
In some cases, Invisalign can be used successfully around existing crowns, bridges, or veneers. In others, your provider may recommend replacing or modifying a restoration as part of your overall treatment plan.
