#1 – Don’t Skimp on the Water

In addition to helping to support the proper function of your vital organs, blood and tissue, water offers several other benefits. Drinking an adequate amount helps to promote saliva production. Saliva is of the utmost importance to your oral health because it helps to flush debris and bacteria from your mouth after you eat or drink. You should aim to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water. For example, a 200-pound person would need to drink around 100 ounces of water daily to be properly hydrated.

#2 – Keep Some Mouthwash Handy

If you’re like most people, you’ll constantly be on the go while on vacation. That means you won’t always be able to stop to brush and floss your teeth as frequently as you’d like. This is where a bottle of mouthwash can be quite helpful. Although it’s not a substitute for brushing and flossing, it can temporarily help to flush any lingering debris from your mouth and freshen your breath.

#3 – Be Careful with the Bubbles

While it may be tempting to sip a few carbonated beverages, be mindful that they contain acids that can wear down your tooth enamel (the hard-outer layer). It’s certainly okay to treat yourself on occasion, but it shouldn’t become a regular habit. After drinking a carbonated beverage, be sure to wait at least 30 minutes before performing dental hygiene so you don’t damage your enamel.

#4 – Use a Straw

You can lessen the effects of drinking a carbonated, sugary or adult beverage by using a straw. It’s also a good idea to finish your drink quickly to decrease the number of bacteria gathering on your teeth.

#5 – Enjoy the Local Fruits

During the summer, you can find a host of colorful and delicious fruits to try out. Inquire about the local delights and treat yourself to them. This is a great way to satisfy a sweet craving while limiting the harmful effects that processed sugar can have on your teeth and gums.
